German immigrants to the United States and their progeny have contributed more to the settling, securing, building, educating, advancing and defending of America than any other ethnic group. To adequately recognize the tremendous impact of German immigrants and to draw attention to the achievements of outstanding German-Americans, one by one, some prominent Americans with German ancestry have established the German-American Hall of Fame. Walter Cronkite, 1916- Area of achievement: Arts and Humanities Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, U.S.A., November 4, 1916 to German parents. Walter attended the University of Texas from 1933 to 1935; Married Mary Elizabeth Maxwell in 1940 who bore him 3 children. Mr. Cronkite was news writer and editor for Scripps-Howard, also for the United Press in Houston, Texas; Kansas City, Missouri; Dallas, Austin and El Paso, Texas; and New York City. He worked for United Press from 1942-45 as war correspondent, foreign correspondent, reopening bureaus in Amsterdam and Brussels as chief correspondent, and served as bureau manager at the Nuremberg war crimes trials. Walter spent time from 1946-48 in Moscow as manager and contributor; SBS news correspondent 1948-49; special correspondent from 1050 to 1981. From 1962 to 1981 Walter was managing editor of the ‘CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite’. . |
His honorary degrees are from: American International College, Harvard University, LL.D., Rollins College, Bucknell University, Syracuse University, L.H.D., and Ohio State University. Walter earned membership in: Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (president, national academy, New York chapter, 1959, Governor Award, 1979); Association Radio News Analysts. Recipient: Several Emmy Awards; Peabody Awards; 1962 and 1981; William A White Award for journalistic merit, 1969; George Polk Journalism Award, 1971; Gold Medal, International Radio and Television Society, 1974; Alfred I DuPont-Columbia University Award in Broadcast Journalism, 1978 and 1981; Presidential Medal of Freedom, 1981.
